Having an excess of gold in World of Warcraft is never a bad thing; there are a whole lot of cool items that can be bought, but are only available to those who have a significant amount of gold on hand. For example, with a hefty amount of gold (in the range of 16,000-20,000 depending on reputation) a player can purchase their own Grand War Mammoth. This mount carries two NPCs, one of which sells reagents, the other which can repair equipment. The Grand War Mammoth mounts can also carry the owner and up to two more player characters, which makes it ideal for power leveling lower level characters and transportation in PVP Battlegrounds. In addition to the Grand War Mammoth, there are epic rings for sale at the Dalaran jewelry shop (in the range of 8,000-10,000 depending on reputation) that have statistics for a 200 item level piece of loot, and can transport the player to Dalaran once per hour. This is quite handy as a second hearthstone.
